How to Triple Space in Your Kitchen

Your kitchen does not necessarily need more cupboards. In many cases, it simply needs to make better use of the space you already have.

From vertical storage to the backs of cabinet doors, there are plenty of overlooked areas that can help you create more storage without adding more furniture. A well-organised kitchen can also save time, reduce stress and make everyday cooking feel much easier.

Here are some of our favourite kitchen organisation ideas for making the most of every centimetre.

Start with how you use your kitchen

Before buying storage products, think about your routines.

Where do you prepare food? Which ingredients do you use every day? What needs to be close to the cooker? Which cupboards are difficult to reach?

There is no single “perfect” kitchen organisation system. The best setup depends on your space, your routines and the people who use the kitchen. Something that works brilliantly for one household may not work at all for another, and that is completely fine.

The goal is to create a kitchen that works for you.

Make use of your walls

One of the easiest ways to create extra kitchen storage is to use vertical space.

Consider:

  • Installing floating shelves for spices, cookbooks or everyday items.
  • Hanging frequently used utensils and pans.
  • Adding a magnetic knife holder to a wall or splashback.
  • Using hooks for lightweight items such as mugs or kitchen towels.

Moving some items out of cupboards and onto the walls can free up valuable cabinet space while keeping frequently used things within easy reach.

Make your cabinets work harder

Kitchen cupboards often contain more unused space than we realise, particularly vertically.

A few simple additions can make a big difference:

  • Add under-shelf baskets to create an extra level for mugs, spices or smaller items.
  • Use tiered risers for tins, jars and cans so you can see everything at the back.
  • Add extra shelf risers to make better use of tall cupboards.
  • Use pull-out shelves or carousels to make deep and corner cupboards easier to access.
  • Group smaller items together in baskets or bins.

For pots and pans, think vertically. Nest what you can and consider using a magazine file to file baking trays, chopping boards and frying pans rather than stacking them in a pile.

And do not forget the inside of your cabinet doors. A simple wire magazine holder or an over-the-door rack can create useful storage for things such as kitchen towels, chopping boards, measuring cups or lightweight pantry items.

Get control of your drawers

Drawers can quickly become a jumble of utensils, gadgets and little bits and pieces.

Drawer organisers are an easy way to give everything a defined place. For smaller items, use little containers or dividers to keep similar things together.

The aim is not to fill every centimetre. It is to make it easy to see and reach what you need.

Keep your countertops clear

Clear countertops can make a kitchen feel instantly calmer and give you more room to prepare food.

Instead of having everyday items spread across the worktop, group them together on a tray. For example, keep cooking oils, salt, pepper and frequently used utensils in one area.

A divided lazy Susan can also be useful for smaller items or children’s snacks, making them easy to grab without creating visual clutter.

If you need additional space, an expandable countertop shelf can create another level for dishes or dry goods without taking over your preparation area.

Do not forget the fridge and freezer

Good kitchen organisation also means being able to see what you already have.

A lazy Susan on a fridge shelf makes it much easier to reach items at the back. In the freezer, containers can help divide different categories and prevent food from becoming one large frozen pile.

When everything is visible, you are less likely to buy duplicates and more likely to notice food before it reaches its expiry date.

Make cleaning storage practical

Under the sink is often an awkward space, but it can be surprisingly useful.

Try using stacking drawers to make better use of the vertical space and group cleaning products together.

A portable cleaning caddy is another simple solution. Instead of carrying individual products around the house, you can take everything you need with you.

Think beyond storage

Good home organisation is not about finding a clever storage product for every single item. It starts with having the right amount of stuff and creating systems that are easy to maintain.

When your kitchen is organised around the way you actually live, you spend less time searching for things, cooking becomes easier and the room feels calmer.

And that is really the point.

An organised kitchen is not about creating a picture-perfect space. It is about creating a space that works effortlessly for your everyday life.
