When Buying More Storage Is Not the Answer

Let’s be honest.

At Calma Organisers, we love a good storage box. Dividers, baskets, containers… when used correctly, they can make organisation much easier.

But there’s an important rule we always follow:

Storage should simplify your home, not complicate it.

Sometimes we think we’re buying solutions when we’re actually buying more clutter.

The goal of home organisation is not to find a container for every object. The goal is to simplify.

Here are a few popular storage products that often create more problems than they solve.

Folding Laundry Boards

You’ve probably seen these online.

The device promises perfectly folded shirts every time.

But honestly? Most adults don’t need a tool to fold clothing.

The size of your folded garments should adapt to your storage space, not the other way around.

When it comes to wardrobe organisation, simple folding (especially file-folding) works just fine.

Large Storage Containers

Big containers often become “dumping boxes”.

Everything goes inside, and before long you have no idea what is actually stored there.

Instead, smaller storage boxes work much better.

They allow you to categorise items clearly and prevent objects from becoming mixed together.

This is especially useful in children’s storage systems, where toys and supplies need clear organisation.

Standing Coat Racks

They look stylish, but they rarely work well in real life.

Standing coat racks often:

  • take up valuable floor space
  • tip over easily
  • collect piles of coats

Wall-mounted hooks are usually a much better solution.

They save space and keep entryways more organised.

Multiple Tiered Hangers

These hangers promise to save wardrobe space, but they quickly become heavy and difficult to use.

Removing one garment often means moving several others.

In most cases, decluttering the wardrobe is a better solution.

If you need to maximise space, high-quality velvet hangers can help without creating unnecessary complexity.

Hanging Wardrobe Organisers

These fabric organisers can be useful temporarily, but they are rarely a long-term solution.

They tend to:

  • lose their shape
  • become overloaded
  • allow items to slip and fall

Installing proper shelving usually works much better for closet organisation.

Plastic Shoe Boxes

They often take up a lot of space and can be surprisingly flimsy.

Instead of stacking plastic boxes, a simple shoe rack keeps footwear accessible and visible.

Sometimes the simplest solution really is the best one.

QR Code Home Organisation Systems

We’ve seen systems where boxes are labelled with QR codes that must be scanned to see what’s inside.

While this may work for large warehouses, it rarely makes sense in a normal home.

If you need an app to find your belongings, you probably have too much.

If you cannot write the contents clearly on the outside of a container, it might be time to declutter.

Suction Cup Storage Racks

We have to confess: we’ve tried these too.

They work… for a while.

Then one day you hear a loud thump and find the rack on the floor.

For long-term organisation, drilling wall shelves provides far more stability and peace of mind.

If you’re looking to organise your home with storage solutions that actually work, we at Calma Organisers are always happy to help.
